From Dreams to Reality: Writing The Thorned Prince
In 2023, I found myself in an unexpected and challenging place: a hospital room. Life has a way of throwing curveballs, and that year, it threw me one I wasn’t prepared for. But in the stillness of those hospital days, surrounded by monitors and the hum of machinery, I began a journey I’d dreamed of my entire life. It was there, between moments of reflection and determination, that The Thorned Prince was born.
For as long as I can remember, stories have been my refuge. As a child, I lived in a world of imagination. I created characters, dreamt up worlds, and wrote endless stories in my mind. My inner dialogue and imaginary friends became my constant companions, guiding me through life’s ups and downs. I never wrote them down, though. They were private, a personal sanctuary that felt too delicate to share.
But something changed in that hospital room. The thought of not bringing my stories to life, of leaving those worlds unexplored, suddenly felt unbearable. It was as if those characters, who had lived in my head for so long, were urging me to give them a voice. And so, I started writing.
The Journey Begins
I didn’t know at the time that The Thorned Prince would become my debut novel. All I knew was that I needed to write. With nothing but my imagination and a laptop, I poured everything into crafting a story that felt as vivid and alive as the dreams I’d always carried with me.
The process was cathartic. I drew inspiration from my own experiences—feelings of being trapped by expectations, the desire to break free, and the struggle to find one’s place in a world that often feels divided. Cassie Stormriven, my storm-wielding protagonist, became a reflection of those emotions. Her quest for freedom and self-discovery mirrored my own journey of taking control of my life and creative aspirations.
Sorin Nightshade, her shadow-wielding counterpart and the thorn in her side (pun intended), represented complexity and duality. His character grew from my fascination with moral ambiguity and the idea that people are rarely just good or evil. Like Cassie, he wrestles with his identity and loyalties, and their intertwined journey became the heart of the story.
Finding Strength Through Writing
Writing The Thorned Prince became more than just a creative outlet; it became my anchor. On days when I felt weak, I drew strength from Cassie’s resilience. When I questioned my ability to continue, I thought about Sorin’s relentless determination. The characters were no longer just figments of my imagination—they were allies, guiding me through a challenging time.
Every chapter I wrote felt like reclaiming a piece of myself. Writing gave me purpose and reminded me of the power of storytelling to heal, connect, and transform.
A Dream Fulfilled
Completing The Thorned Prince was a dream come true, but it was also terrifying. Sharing a story that had lived in my head for so long felt deeply personal and vulnerable. Would people connect with the characters? Would they see the magic and emotion I’d poured into the world?
The answers to those questions didn’t come all at once, but as I began sharing snippets with friends and beta readers, the response was overwhelmingly positive. People connected with the themes of resilience, forbidden love, and the tension of loyalty in a divided world.
Looking Ahead
Now, as The Thorned Prince prepares to meet readers for the first time, I feel a mix of excitement and gratitude. This book represents so much more than a story—it’s a testament to the power of perseverance and the importance of following your dreams, even when the odds seem stacked against you.
For those who, like me, have spent their lives creating stories in their minds but hesitated to put them on paper, I hope my journey inspires you to take that leap. Your voice, your stories—they matter.
To my readers: thank you for giving The Thorned Prince a chance. I hope it resonates with you as much as it did with me while writing it. And to the characters who’ve lived in my mind all these years: thank you for waiting so patiently to come to life.
Here’s to the magic of storytelling and to the worlds we create, both within and beyond the pages of a book.
